The study

Over one year, 200 people will collaborate with Verily to test a smartphone app and health coaching program and use both medical and non-medical devices.

Smartphone app

Our investigational app is designed to help make managing your diabetes easier. You will have the opportunity to give feedback through surveys and interviews to help shape the development of the app.

Health coaching

Our health coaches are hand-selected professionals with more than 50 years of combined experience in improving the lives of people with diabetes. Your coach can provide expert advice and resources about nutrition, exercise, and general diabetes information.

Devices

Collecting health data continuously over time is a critical step toward better disease management. You will be given access to devices that collect data related to your blood sugar, diet, and activity.

We value your input. In return, you'll receive

Commercially available devices at no cost to you

Personalized health coaching for up to one year

Compensation for your time and feedback

Your health data and test results to share with your doctor

Study FAQs

The purpose of the study, which will be led by Verily, is to develop an intelligent, elegant way to manage diabetes. The study will involve 200 people who will assess the usability of a diabetes management platform over one year.

Project Baseline is a broad effort to better understand health and prevent disease. The first initiative is a 10,000-person, 4-year study focused on health and disease more generally. This study is a new, complementary initiative focused on promoting health and managing disease progression for people with Type 2 diabetes. Additional initiatives will launch in the future.

We will select a sample of people of diverse ages, ethnicities, geographic locations, health histories, and other demographic and medical information. If you are not invited to participate, it likely means that we have already met our requirements for people of your age, location, health status, etc.

You do not have to pay anything to be involved. Earn a minimum of $75 upon enrollment and more as you go.

We take your privacy seriously. The data you provide will be accessible only to authorized study personnel and will be kept confidential. Members of the study team who need to contact you, such as your health coach, will have access to directly identifying information (your name, street address, phone number, and email). This study has been approved by the Western Institutional Review Board, which protects the rights and safety of research participants.

While your health coach may provide advice and resources about nutrition, exercise, and general diabetes information, you will not receive any medical treatment by participating in this study. Any information that you receive should not be used by you to make medical decisions. You should consult your doctor if you have questions about medical decisions during the course of the study.

You can continue with any medications or treatments you are already taking. You will not be asked to take new ones, unless directed by your doctor.

We will not share any information with your insurance or medical providers without your consent. You and your doctor will continue to make decisions about your care.

No. You will have access to the smartphone app, health coach, and devices remotely.

You can report any lost or broken devices to the study staff. Decisions to replace lost or broken devices are made by study staff on a case-by-case basis.
